Africa

Name: Baguini

Region: Somalia, East Africa or "Horn of Africa".

Type: Chordophone, bowed, single stringed.

Source: Value Village, "a thrift store", year 2005.

Description: The baguini is a small cordophone or in particular bowed instrument having a single string instruments who bare only one string are refered to as a "monophone". the baguini has a small square body which is wrapped over and stitched over with animal hide. a single string of horse hair goes through in which the bow for this type of instrument is also hand made and uses horse hair. In the case of my specimen the string goes through a drilled whole in the bridge, and with most of these instruments the bridge is "movable". Many of the close cousins of this instrument are found in neighboring Eritrea and also in neighboring areas near by. Other monophonic cordophones do exist in North Western Africa in the case of the Rabab of Morocco although they are of the same family of instruments however they are not related.
