Instruments

Name: Mesenko or Mesinko

Region: Ethiopia > Africa.

Type: Bowed > Chordophone.

Source: Value Village, "a thrift store", year 2005.

Description: The mesenko is a small single stringed bowed monochord.. The Masenko has a small square body which is wrapped over and stitched over with animal hide. A single string of horse hair goes through a small whole in an triangle shaped adjustable bridge; the bow is also made from wood and horse hair. My specimen the string goes through a drilled whole in the bridge, and with most of these instruments the bridge is "movable". Many of the close cousins of this instrument are found in neighboring Eritrea and other close areas. One can find other bowed monochords such as the Rebab in Morocco.
