In Indonesia the suling is found in Bali, Java and Sunda and it is the lead instrument of Gamelan ensembles. The suling maybe tuned either in a pelog scale which is septatonic (seven note scale) and the selendro scale. There are many techniques incorporated into suling playing they include jaw-vibrato, this is where the musician moves his lower jaw to achieve the vibrato, grace notes, and circular breathing.

In Malaysia: Amongst the Kenya-Kayan people the suling can be found either as a flute only having 3 hole and 6 hole flutes. Often these flutes are hand carved of bamboo and they are ornamental.
